NATURE MEETS HISTORY
Beaver Brook Reservation, the first reservation created by the Metropolitan Parks Commission, now the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), was established in 1893 to protect the Waverley Oaks, a stand of 22 massive and ancient white oaks.
Though the last of the original trees died in the 1920s, their legacy lives on. At least one enormous descendant still towers within the park today, and a monument to the Waverley Oaks stands as a tribute to their historical and ecological significance. (Source: Waltham Land Trust)
Today, visitors can take a Self-Guided Tree Walk which highlights the diversity and legacy of trees at Beaver Brook.
The reservation has long served as a popular retreat within the city, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually in its early years including renowned artists like Boston native Winslow Homer.

EXPLORE THE SCENIC NORTH SECTION
Ponds, fields, wooden walking trails and a cascading waterfall make up the reservation’s north section. As you wander the trails, you’ll come across fascinating historic sites, including:
• The Robert Morris Copeland House: Home to one of the original landscape architects of the 19th century, this site connects visitors to the early roots of American landscape design.
• Remnants of a 19th-Century Flour Mill: Tucked along the brook, these stone foundations are a quiet reminder of the area’s industrial past and its ties to local economic life over 150 years ago.

RECREATION & RELAXATION IN THE SOUTH SECTION
The more developed south section features paved trails, ball fields, tennis courts, spray park and playground, picnic area with covered pavilions, and restrooms.
The reservation is dog-friendly, making it a popular spot for pet owners looking to enjoy the outdoors with their four-legged companions so you’re sure to encounter plenty of happy, fuzzy faces.
THE POWER OF OUTDOOR SPACE
In today’s fast-paced work environment, even a few minutes outdoors can make a big difference. Access to outdoor space gives employees a chance to step away, recharge, and return more focused and refreshed.
At the end of 2024, we surveyed our Waverley Oaks Park employees to uncover what employees value most in an office environment.
The survey found that employees value outdoor recreation as a refreshing break from the workday and Beaver Brook Reservation offers the perfect setting. With its scenic trails and peaceful waterways, it’s ideal for a midday walk through trails and over wooden bridges or a team lunch under the trees.
