Let’s follow commuter Madora as she begins her morning journey from Boston’s North End.

7:10AM
NORTH END – BOSTON
The neighborhood is already buzzing at 7 a.m. Delivery trucks unloading for neighborhood restaurants, commuters heading out to the office, and locals catching up over coffee.
As I leave the neighborhood behind, I head toward North Station, crossing Portal Park with I-93 traffic rushing below. I can’t help but feel grateful to be out in the fresh air on this beautiful July morning – on foot, not stuck behind the wheel!
7:25AM
NORTH STATION – BOSTON
Inside North Station, I move through the crowds of commuters arriving from the suburbs. I flash my mTicket app and pass through the gates toward the train platforms.
There’s a Dunkin’ conveniently located inside the terminal, and my mobile order – an iced coffee – is already waiting. I grab it and head toward the Fitchburg Line platform, coffee in hand.
7:30AM
NORTH STATION – BOSTON
As I enter the train, I choose an empty seat – one of the many perks of reverse commuting! I settle back, relax, and sip my coffee as the train rolls out of the city.
The ride is peaceful. I scroll through social media, catching up on the news and the latest memes.
We make stops in Cambridge and Belmont to pick up more passengers before reaching my stop – Waverley. The whole trip takes just 17 minutes!
7:47AM
WAVERLEY STATION – BELMONT
I exit the train and step onto the Waverley platform. Waverley Station also has bus connections to two MBTA routes.
Just outside, the Waverley Oaks shuttle is already waiting, ready to take us the rest of the way. Some days, I even skip the shuttle and stroll through Beaver Brook Reservation instead. It’s just a 10-minute walk, and the peaceful trails offer the perfect transition between train and work.
7:50AM
BELMONT, MA
The shuttle departs. It’s a seamless transition – no waiting, no stress – just a quick, 5-minute ride from the station to the park. If you’re not an early riser, no worries! The shuttle returns to Waverley Station for a second pickup later in the morning.
The shuttle even has a live tracking feature, which makes it easy to see exactly where it is as it originates at Alewife Station in Cambridge.
7:55AM
WAVERLEY OAKS PARK – WALTHAM
The shuttle arrives at 425 Waverley Oaks Rd! I thank the driver and head into the office.
The shuttle makes two stops within the park and will continue on to 271 Waverley Oaks Road before looping back to Alewife Station for its next departure.
By 8 a.m., I’m stepping into the office refreshed and caffeinated. No bumper-to-bumper traffic, no car troubles – just a smooth, scenic ride from the heart of the city to the calm of Waverley Oaks Park.
For anyone looking to blend the energy of Boston with the balance of suburban work life, this car-free routine is hard to beat.
